You can renew items by:

  • renewing them yourself through Library Search using My Account
  • telephoning your library
  • using a self- service machine within the library
  • consulting a member of staff at the service desk within the library

Please note, you will not be able to renew via self-issue or Library Search if:

  • you have outstanding overdue charges in excess of £5 (please see here for payment information)
  • the book has been requested by another reader
  • your Smartcard has expired
  • you have reached the maximum renewal limit on that item

Maximum renewal periods

There is a limit to how long an item can be renewed:

  • general (4 week loans) - 36 weeks
  • one week loans - 7 weeks

When this limit is reached you have to bring the item to the library for renewal.

Renewing books requested by other readers

If an item has been requested by another reader (a hold request) you will not be able to renew it and its due date may have been changed by our system. Please return a requested book as soon as possible to the library from which you borrowed it. Requested books returned after the due date will incur a recall charge plus an additional charge if also overdue. View our charge amounts.

Overdue books

Overdue books can still be renewed in any of the usual ways outlined at the top of this page, as long as they are not invoiced, recalled or at maximum renewals.
