Cleft@18-23

Improving outcomes by addressing variation at the end of routine care for young adults born with cleft lip and/or palate.

About the project

Cleft@18-23 is a major research programme that investigates how well young adults born with a cleft lip and/or palate are doing when they leave routine cleft care and transition into adulthood.

It aims to understand whether outcomes such as:

  • appearance
  • speech
  • hearing
  • dental health
  • wellbeing
  • education
  • quality of life

differ according to factors including ethnicity, sex, socio-economic status, health literacy and geography, and to identify any inequalities in these outcomes.

The programme aims to determine how identified variations can be addressed to ensure all young adults have the same chance of achieving the best possible outcomes. The findings will inform improved models of support as they move from child to adult services.
