Being a Peer Mentor cultivates leadership skills, aids personal growth through supporting others, builds a supportive community, and offers a chance to make new connections. It's a rewarding experience that develops valuable transferable skills.

Being a Peer Mentor

I decided to become a Peer Mentor as after being a house captain at my high school, I experienced firsthand how having support from fellow peers can help make school such a brighter and more supportive environment. I therefore wanted to transfer my skills and use them to make first years feel less anxious about starting university life. In doing this, I wanted to improve my leadership and communication skills as well as to pay forward the support and guidance I received when I was navigating the same challenges. Furthermore, being a Peer Mentor allows me to make a positive impact and inspire others.

As a Peer Mentor, I provide guidance, support, and encouragement to my mentees, helping them navigate challenges and give advice when needed. I schedule meetings to talk about any issues or queries my mentees may have but also to listen to the positives about their university experience so far and how much they are enjoying being part of the Fine Art community. I also always make sure to bring some chocolates to snack on!

A mentee can expect a Peer Mentor to provide a safe space to ask any questions, share experiences, and offer academic and personal advice free of judgement. We want to get to know you and are happy to help!

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

As a Peer Mentor, I've honed invaluable transferable skills. Effective communication, both verbal and written, is paramount in guiding and supporting peers. My leadership and time management skills have flourished through organising meetings and facilitating group discussions. My adaptability and compassion shine when navigating diverse personalities and situations, fostering empathy and teamwork along the way.

I would definitely encourage students to consider becoming a Peer Mentor! I think it cultivates leadership skills, aids personal growth through supporting others, builds a supportive community, and offers a chance to make new connections while helping to navigate someone's personal and academic journey. It's a rewarding experience that develops valuable transferable skills for the future.
