Reading Lists for Academic Staff
The online reading list system is managed by the University Library and can be accessed through Canvas.
Within each module course in Canvas, you will see a link to your Library Reading List on the left hand side. If a list already exists for this module, it will be displayed; if not you will be able to create one from scratch.

How can I manage my online Reading List?
You can add, edit and amend your own reading list and we have a step by step guide which shows you how to add items from the Library Catalogue, how to add items manually or using the Cite it! function. You can also request ebooks to bought or book chapters/articles to be scanned under the CLA licence.
Do I need to send my list to the Library?
You might need to contact your reading lists team if you have:
- created a brand new reading list for a new module
- inherited the module from another academic and have changed the reading list
- noticed an increase in the number of expected students and are worried about stock levels
- noticed some broken links on your list and would like the citations checked
- received feedback from students about accessing resources
Ordering of items: essential, recommended and background
When adding citations to your reading list each item should have a tag applied to it. Tags will help students and the library understand the importance of the item as well as allowing decisions to be made about the number of copies available.
- essential reading – very important to the course, all students will need to use this text
- recommended reading – supplementary texts which students are encouraged to use
- background reading – additional texts which are suggested for background subject area reading
Depending on the cost and whether an ebook version is available we tend to follow these guidelines to help decide with our acquisitions:
SAgE Faculty modules
- Essential and Recommended reading - 1:10 book/student ratio for printed stock
- Background - 1:25 book/student ratio for printed stock
HASS Faculty modules
- Essential reading - 1:10-1:30 book/student ratio for printed stock
- Recommended and Background - one copy will be ordered for long loan
FMS Faculty modules
- Essential reading - 1:8-1:75 book/student ratio for printed stock
- Recommended - 1:20 book/student ratio for printed stock
- Background - one copy will be ordered for long loan
