Current role
Deputy Director, NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Specialist Centre for Public Health
Senior Research Methodologist, NIHR Research Support Service (Newcastle and Partners)
Principal Research Associate
I am Deputy Director, NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Specialist Centre for Public Health.
Established on 1 October 2023, the Centre's vision is to work nationally and with NIHR Research Support Service, NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaborations and all local government to support the development of a research culture and the infrastructure, capacity and capability to enable practitioners and researchers to carry out high quality public health research, outside the NHS.
I lead the Centre's research design service, a team of 22 research methodologists who provide advice on the design and delivery of public health research projects for researchers and aspiring researchers at all career stages.
As a member of the centre’s leadership team, I contribute to the Centre’s overall strategy, including work to support the development of a culture of and capacity for public health research in non-NHS settings and am a co-applicant in the Centre’s Research Delivery Pilot.

Other Expertise
My other research interests include:
- Consequences of maternal obesity
- Assessing the public health importance of diabetes, obesity and related conditions in economically and socially disadvantaged populations
- Evaluating measures for the prevention of diabetes, obesity and related conditions, particularly in economically and socially disadvantaged populations

Current Work
I am involved in work to explore inequalities in health, particularly around the contribution of wider determinants of health to the development of chronic disease.
In my role as a methodologist for the NIHR RSS and Specialist Centre for Public Health, I advise on the design and deliverability of a wide range of studies including observational studies, using routine data, mixed methods research and trials.
Undergraduate Teaching
I deliver sessions on epidemiology to undergraduate students on the MBBS and Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours programmes.
