Module catalogue
These attendance modules require you to attend fixed (though infrequent) study days at the University campus. Some modules run more than once in a year and where this applies, you should choose the link for the semester in which you would like to study.
Semester 1 begins at the end of September. Semester 2 begins at the end of January. Semester 3 begins in mid-June. We list exact semester dates on the University Calendar.
Higher Education Short Courses offers students greater choice in how you study, with flexible options to develop your skills. Newcastle University is one of the first providers to offer an exciting new short course in Digital Healthcare. Our curriculum draws on our significant expertise in industry-academic co-development of data science and clinical education. This flexible pathway will be available to all healthcare workers, at all career stages. You’ll learn using ‘real-world’ case studies developed with our, NHS partners and clinical teaching team, who have over 20 years’ experience of teaching clinical programmes flexibly and online.
Modules
This short course consists of two 20 credit modules at level six, that you can study over one or two academic years, giving you the flexibility to study around your work at a pace that works for you
Module 1: Foundational data science literacy for healthcare
Data science literacy is a fundamental requirement for any healthcare practitioner in a modern healthcare setting. Foundational data science training brings significant potential to close the gap in technical understanding required to translate data and AI, into clinical value, to develop a culture of trust in the use of data and provide guidance on developing capacity in data science and AI. Our training will empower you to identify real opportunities and gaps and offers practical guidance to support your role in the governance of these systems.
Module 2: Applied Data Science for Healthcare
You’ll learn to engage with the various modalities of data found in healthcare, including structured (e.g. tabular, relational), unstructured (e.g. image, video and audio) data. The module will support you to acquire and apply specialised data science techniques in a range of healthcare scenarios. This will include no- and low-code solutions as well as gaining exposure to programmatic approaches to tackling these challenges.
