Assessment Process

If you think you require support with a mental health issue, it's possible to request an assessment appointment. During the assessment appointment, we’ll discuss the range of support available to you and which option might best suit your particular needs.

This could include:

  • time focused counselling
  • signposting to other specialist services, either within the University or externally.

Please read our counselling information for students‌ (PDF:215KB) before booking an assessment appointment to help you decide whether counselling with us is right for you.

You can request an assessment appointment by phoning us on + 44 (0) 191 208 3333, or by web form. You will be contacted as soon as an appointment becomes available.

Additionally, registered students at the university have the ability to book and cancel their own assessment appointments. To do this, students need to go to studenthealthandwellbeing.ncl.ac.uk, select Student Login and use their university student login details. (Please note the system works best on Windows and Chrome. If they're on campus and using Internet Explorer it may log them in automatically.)

If the student is unable to find an appointment, they will need to use the query link at the top of the page to submit a request, or alternatively email sws.therapyappointments@ncl.ac.uk and a member of the team will contact them to arrange an appointment.

Sometimes accessing our online resources can resolve the current concern and you may not need any further support from the service. Likewise, after attending the assessment appointment you may feel that you don’t need ongoing counselling sessions.

If you’re concerned about keeping yourself safe or need immediate help and support, you should contact your GP and read our emergency and out of hours page.
