About Zhe's career

Describe your current occupation:

I’m mainly responsible for teaching oral English to college English major students, and I’m also working on an online platform for adult students to practice their English speaking.

Everything I learned and experienced in Newcastle helped me think differently and more broadly, motivating me to become a better version of myself.

Studying Linguistics at Newcastle University

What was your work/study experience before joining this course?

Before joining the course, I had just completed my bachelor’s degree at a university in China. At that time, I was enjoying learning everything about English, and I was trying to improve my speaking by talking with English speakers online and in person.

In China, I had quite a lot of part-time jobs teaching English. Because of my interest in teaching and learning English, I decided to apply for MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle University.

How was the course for you?

Studying in Newcastle was absolutely amazing! I just completed the course about half a year ago, and already that whole year feels like a wild dream. Words couldn’t describe how grateful I’m for all the eminent teachers I met at Newcastle University.

I never thought I would have the privilege to be able to study with them. They taught me about Applied Linguistics and TESOL – and also passed on their wisdom of life!

How has studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle helped you in your career?

It equipped me with essential knowledge and skills to be capable of working as an academic researcher and a TESOL teacher. I used to lack confidence. But this whole year of studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL gave me the confidence to work as an English teacher, especially at the international level.

Everything I learned and experienced in Newcastle helped me think differently and more broadly, motivating me to become a better version of myself.

What advice would you give to a student interested in studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL?

Well, it might be cliché, but I do believe ‘interest’ is the best teacher. If you find it hard to choose a course, then allow your personal interests to guide your decision. Other than that, time management skill is the most important factor. If you don’t want to feel depressed and in a rush to finish everything at the last minute, you should balance your leisure life and study. If you encounter any difficulties, please turn to your lecturers. Lecturers on Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle University are so helpful and capable. Finally, just enjoy your life and study at Newcastle University!

What was the best thing about studying at Newcastle?

This is the last paragraph I wrote in the acknowledgement of my dissertation:
I would like to thank Newcastle United football club and the Geordie fans; I have been watching football and being a football fan for many years, but you have given me a mind-blowing experience each time I go watch a game of Newcastle. I will keep supporting Newcastle for the rest of my life. Howay the lads!

Even though now I’m living in a place tens of thousands of miles away from Newcastle, deep down, I still consider myself a Geordie boy. I miss the football, miss everything, everybody there. So cherish every moment in Newcastle if you are fortunate enough to study there!
