Studying a PGCE at Newcastle University

What subject did you train to teach?

French and Spanish.

Where are you currently working?

North Shore Academy, Stockton.

How long have you been working there?

This is my second year.

What is your role, have you taken on any additional responsibilities?

I am student voice lead.

Why did you choose to undertake your PGCE through / at Newcastle University?

I chose Newcastle due to their fantastic student feedback for their PGCE. I had previously done my undergrad at Sunderland, however I decided to choose Newcastle as they had the course I wanted to study for my teaching, and on my interview I had a great experience and felt as though I wanted to study there.

What did you most enjoy about the course?

I just loved it. The bond we had as student teachers was amazing, all in it together and helped each other with everything we possibly could. Lynne was always there for feedback and Jon offered amazing guidance in one to one meetings to develop as teachers. I also loved the two schools I had placements in, all be it- they were challenging, but they set me in good stead for what was to come once I qualified.

How did you find making new friends while studying with us? Have you kept in touch with anyone?

I have kept in touch with Emma and Jen- Emma did maths and Jen was MFL too. Making friends was super easy as everyone had the same encounters and were able to offer help or tips with how to deal with particular problems.

What did you enjoy about studying in Newcastle as a city?

I am a Newcastle girl, I just love the city so much. It offers everything you need, and above all everyone is so friendly.

What advice might you have for future student teachers?

Believe in yourself. You may have a tough day but reflect on what went wrong and how you can do better. Get back up and move forward addressing those issues and making sure you overcome them!
