Coastal Futures and Fragile Habitats
This inter-generational project explored the role that school-aged children can play in leading environmental initiatives.
In this unique, pupil-driven project, we looked at how school-age students can add their opinions to how local habitats are managed.
What we did
Pupils from King Edward VI School in Morpeth lead a survey of fragile coastal sand dunes and associated coastal lagoons at a number of sites in Duridge Bay.
Druridge Links has designated Heritage Coast status. It is a reserve of outstanding wildlife interest.
The pupils gave recommendations for management steps. Staff from the local Merck Sharp and Dohme plant at Cramlington, and from Northumberland Wildlife Trust will implement. In this way, the pupils contributed to the future preservation of these sites.
This project was awarded the North East Process Industry Cluster environmental award.
