Tale of the Herring
Celebrating fishing as a way of life in the North East.
Fishing grew from a subsistence occupation to a thriving industry along the east coast of England during the last century. It became a way of life rather than a job.
What we did
The Tale of the Herring project aimed to facilitate local communities to collate their own heritage information and learn more about the fish that were caught and the boats that were used.
Five communities participated: Amble, Newbiggin, Cullercoats, North Shields and Lowestoft. A school in each village got involved.
They investigated their maritime heritage in a series of workshops, which culminated in a community exhibition and film show.

These exhibitions toured all of the harbours so five individual studies ultimately become one large one.
Funding was gratefully received from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
