The Peer Mentor role provided me with the opportunity for personal growth as I developed my leadership and communication skills and witnessed the progress my mentee group went through, which felt truly rewarding.

Being a Peer Mentor

The main reason I decided to become a Peer Mentor was my desire to help and support others during the first year of their course by sharing my experiences and offering support. The Peer Mentor role also provided me with the opportunity for personal growth as I developed my leadership and communication skills and witnessed the progress my mentee group went through, which felt truly rewarding.

As a Peer Mentor, my role is mainly about providing support, guidance, and assistance to my mentee group by sharing my own experiences when I was a student at their stage, and by guiding them to the different support and resources Newcastle University provides to help them with their studies. This involves active listening during meetings and providing feedback and advice on academic challenges.

A mentee can expect different helpful insights from a Peer Mentor, which include guidance and support when facing challenges, sharing and relating to personal experiences to offer advice and feedback when needed, active listening to understand the student's concerns, challenges, and goals and problem-solving by working and addressing different challenges together. Mentees can also expect their Peer Mentor to create a positive environment where they feel comfortable seeking advice and help.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

Some of the main skills that I have developed as a Peer Mentor include leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Organising and leading meetings has helped me develop my leadership skills. Actively listening and addressing students' queries and providing them with the appropriate feedback and advice has helped me to develop my communication skills. My problem-solving skills were also honed as I was responsible for helping my mentees solve any difficulties they encountered during their course.

Being a Peer Mentor is an opportunity to create a positive influence on other’s lives. Make the most out of this opportunity that allows you to develop different skills, share your experiences and contribute to the personal growth of your mentee group.
