Research Projects
Promoting Effective and Rapid Stroke Care (PEARS)
We aimed to increase the efficiency of acute stroke care by implementing and exploring various methods to optimise pre-hospital protocols and access to treatment to improve functional outcomes for patients.
Objective 1
Paramedic Acute Stroke Treatment Assessment (PASTA)
I conducted a survey to assess the views of paramedics involved in the PASTA trial which explored the impact of an enhanced paramedic role on patient treatment and outcomes.
Objective 2
PEARS 2
The aim of PEARS 2 was to increase thrombectomy provision to eligible patients by optimising the configuration of stroke services.
I constructed a survey for the helicopter emergency services to assess the feasibility of the use of air-ambulances for secondary transfer of stroke patients to neuroscience centres for thrombectomy. I presented the results of the survey at UK Stroke Forum Conference. I also conducted a survey on patient and public preferences in relation to thrombectomy service configuration.
Pre-hospital Diagnostics Literature Review
We conducted a scoping review of technologies, with potential for pre-hospital stroke (and sub-type) diagnosis and/or stratification, which could be used by paramedics.
Study in Novel Neuro-muscular Imaging Biomarkers for Motor Outcome in Stroke (SINONIMS)
I am currently working on the SINONIMS study which aims to utilise neuro-muscular imaging biomarkers to predict lower limb motor outcome following stroke. Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will be used to assess white matter integrity in the brain, as well as muscle quality in the lower limb. The study will examine the impact of sarcopaenia (age related muscle degeneration) and loss of connectivity in the corticospinal tract on motor recovery. The goal is to increase the accuracy of prognosis to allow provision of tailored treatments.
Formal Teaching Experience
Tutored an undergraduate student in experimental data collection during MSc.
Taught Biomedical Sciences Seminar on Stroke diagnostic blood biomarkers.
Informal Teaching Experience
Significant time spent personally tutoring friends and course mates during undergraduate and postgraduate study:
-Assistance with statistical methods.
-Providing accessible explanations to assist conceptualisation of complex concepts.
-Writing/editing guidance.
