Background
I’m a Senior Research Associate working in the EPSRC-funded Digital Economy Research Centre (DERC) across Open Lab and the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University. My research interests include the everyday experiences of older people, and the development of innovative (digital) approaches to address societal challenges such as loneliness, isolation, health and care in later life.
Over the last 12 years, I’ve worked with older people and health care professionals on a range of qualitative and mixed methods studies to explore experiences of everyday life related to housing, health and care.
Current work:
- Feasibility/pilot cluster randomised controlled trial of use of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) in care homes
- Innovate UK and Anchor Hanover - Emerging and Enabling Technologies Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)
- Exploring the journeys and experiences of people interacting with Care and Repair Newcastle (CARN), in collaboration with colleagues in Newcastle City Council
- New approaches to measure social interaction using wearable digital technologies
Recent projects:
- Online UK passport applications: the experiences of older adults in the North East of England, in collaboration with the Home Office
- Caring as a social determinant of health: Evidence review and implementation resource for Public Health England (PHE)
- Exploring the role of technology in optimising social connections in later life within a geographically local community context
- Exploring patient barriers to the diagnosis of Giant Cell Arteritis in primary care
- Pilot trial of an integrated approach to improve care for people with long term conditions (ENHANCE)
- Hip Injection Trial (HIT) for patients with hip osteoarthritis
- Patient Experiences of Gout study
- Longitudinal study of Ageing in a Retirement Community (LARC),
