SAFELUX – The Light We Need
Project description
As part of the SAFELUX project, we are gathering the evidence for road lighting mitigation on biodiversity as well as energy savings and road safety.
For more information about the project see here: SAFELUX - project description.
The evidence gathered will input into new road safety guidelines for national road authorities across Europe.
The evidence will be presented as the figure below (note this is an illustrative figure) but we need your help!
Knowledge Network
The Knowledge Network is an integral part of the SAFELUX project, and it provides a space for the exchange of ideas and information based on the expertise of the consortium.
It aims to integrate experts and practitioners from diverse disciplines and industries working on ‘the light we need’, and thus create opportunities for co-learning and project co-design, as well as creating links to the other work packages (WPs). It will advance interdisciplinary working by utilising the co-production prism to improve mutual understanding and knowledge exchange among stakeholders. It will also allow for all outputs of the project to be shared.
We welcome anyone who can advance the work of SAFELUX to join the Knowledge Network, and we encourage everyone including lighting and infrastructure specialists, road safety experts, ecologists and Dark Sky advocates to share their work. At the early stage of the project, we are seeking information relating to road lighting and its effects on ecology, energy, road safety, and any work relating to testing lighting configurations, light mitigation measures (such as part-night lighting, dimming, smart/adaptive lighting, spectral tuning [e.g. changing light CCTs], and more). In joining, we also hope to occasionally call on you to clarify any evidence, extract it (in the case of it being written in a different language; guidance will be provided), comment on the work outputs, respond in timely manner, and join us for the final conference and information dissemination. We may also call on you to help with expert elicitation workshops if evidence gaps are identified.

To share any reports, information or evidence with us, please upload it to this folder or email it to: madeleine.fabusova@newcastle.ac.uk**
Thank you for being part of this effort, and we hope you enjoy participating in the Knowledge Network and SAFELUX.

**Please note that any documents uploaded to this folder will be regularly removed and archived in a database held within Newcastle University, and made available to the wider SAFELUX consortium and will inform the outputs of this project. Despite all documents being regularly removed, anyone who opens the folder can see the documents currently present in the folder. Thus, we deem all documents as publicly available evidence, that can be found on another online repository. Thus, we cannot take responsibility for the sharing of any sensitive information. Should you deem anything as important to share, but sensitive, please send as email to madeleine.fabusova@newcastle.ac.uk or Darren.evans@newcastle.ac.uk explaining the situation prior to the upload of the documents. We will note down who uploaded the document, and this information will be purely used in the instance that we have any questions about the document.
