Capstone Modules
NEW: A vision for education and skills at Newcastle University: Education for Life 2030+
Capstone Modules are in the final stage of our transformed undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes. Through Capstones students demonstrate a deep understanding of their subject, critically evaluate arguments, make judgements and solve complex problems. Capstone modules offer self-direction permitting students to engage with areas of interest.
Capstones in our diverse programmes
Programme teams can define outputs that students produce to suit their subject area – these could include: dissertations, oral presentations, posters, portfolios, case studies, reports, exhibitions, business plans, creative media. Capstones are a progression of Encounters with the Leading Edge evidencing skills and attributes that are authentic to the discipline. In keeping with the LEC principles of learning and teaching, Capstones incorporate a reflective component.
The credit weighting and level of Capstones varies by programme type:
In Undergraduate Programmes
- a 40 credit module delivered in one semester or split across both semesters (20/20)
- meeting the requirements of FHEQ Level 6 and relevant PSRBs
In Post-graduate Taught Programmes
- a 60 credit module delivered in one semester or split across up to three semesters (40/20, 20/40, 20/20/20)
- meeting the requirements of FHEQ Level 7 and relevant PSRBs
See LEC (section 4) and QCPDF (para 22-26) for a full list of requirements, options and permitted exceptions.
