Faculty of Medical Sciences

Our Research

Our primary aim is to turn scientific advances into direct benefits for patients.

A researcher in gerontology looks at findings under a microscope.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences fosters leading edge research in a range of specialisms. It supports world-renowned research leaders and attracts new doctoral students.

We foster research through three institutes dedicated to:

  • Biosciences Research
  • Translational and Clinical Research
  • Population Health Sciences

Themes of research

Across these institutes, our 20 research themes cover diverse areas, including:

  • ageing
  • cancer
  • dementia
  • neuroscience
  • nutrition
  • reproduction

Research funders

We also host recognised research centres supported by funders including:

  • MRC
  • National Institute for Health Research
  • Wellcome Trust
  • Arthritis Research UK
  • Cancer Research UK

We ranked 8th in England for combined “Medical” Units of Assessment in Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.

Translational research

We support strong basic science that translates to clinical research to benefit patients. We encourage collaborative working between scientists and clinicians across disciplines and specialties.

Newcastle has significant clinical research infrastructure. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) support this. As One NIHR North East, we look to capitalise upon opportunities by working together.

We maintain important links to local clinical specialities through specialty based research groups.

We have access to a large number of stable and well characterised patient cohorts. They support translational research.

We have developed close links with local NHS Trusts. to ensure that our work translates into new treatments for patients.

Research fellowships

We are continually seeking to enhance our areas of research excellence. We offer independent research development opportunities for outstanding early career researchers.

You can apply through our Newcastle University Research Fellowship Scheme.

Research facilities

The Faculty is home to specialist facilities and equipment that support research. We also have a clinical trials unit.

The Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO) exists to support our world class research.
