Dr Tony Baker is Lab Technician and Lab Steward for the Marine Biology department in Ridley Building, as well as being a Technician in Devonshire. He originally graduated with 1st Class Honours in Marine Biology from Newcastle University before gaining his Doctorate from Exeter University. He has been working back in in his alma mater since February 2022.
Tony’s main role in Ridley is to provide the bridge between technical and research support for post-doctoral students and undergraduates; in particular his background and knowledge of Marine Science is of paramount importance for advising on and supporting student projects, thus freeing up PI time for other science activities. Tony is also responsible for day-to-day lab management, from purchasing, to organisation, to equipment maintenance and repair, as well as maintaining stocks of algal cultures and animal husbandry. Within the Devonshire Building he is also responsible for gases, stockroom control, laundry, waste sterilisation, and media preparation for various departments.
Tony’s previous experience includes sales support across Asia and holiday-let property management in Portugal. In terms of leisure, Tony is a keen golfer and cue sports enthusiast, and enjoys overseas travel to swim with and film sharks. He lives with a very demanding cat.
