Canvas Announcements
Canvas Announcements are a feature within the Canvas that allows you to communicate important information to your students as a broadcast message. You can use announcements to share updates, reminders, and important information about the course to all your students or specific sub groups of students using Canvas Sections.
When an announcement is posted, students receive notifications based on their preferred settings, ensuring they stay informed.
How you can use the Canvas Announcements in my Courses
Canvas Announcements are a versatile tool that can significantly enhance communication within your courses.
In this section, we’ll explore the various ways you can effectively use announcements to keep your students informed, engaged, and organised. From sharing important updates about your course, to sending reminders to students and providing additional resources, we’ll cover the best practices and tips for making the most out of this feature.
Weekly Overview and Wrap Ups
You can use Canvas Announcements to remind students to engage with activities that need to be completed before the upcoming week’s lessons.
This can include reading materials, contributing discussion posts, quizzes, or any preparatory work. Regular reminders help ensure students stay on track and come to class prepared.
Canvas Announcements can also be used to provide an overview of the week’s learning objectives and to introduce upcoming topics for the following week. This approach helps students understand the context of their current studies and prepares them for future lessons.
You can provide a round up and a list of activities they should have completed that week. Additionally you can provide a preview to the next week or topic.
Assignment and Tasks Reminders
Using Canvas Announcements, you can remind students of upcoming assignments and provide direct links to these assessments. This ensures that students are reminded of a pending assessment and can easily access the necessary materials. Additionally, you can include important details such as due dates, submission guidelines, and any relevant resources to help students stay on track.
Canvas Announcements Essentials
A Canvas announcement is a message you post in your course to communicate important information to all your students at once. You can use announcements to share updates, reminders, schedule changes, weekly overviews, or anything students need to know. When you publish an announcement, Canvas notifies students based on their personal notification settings, helping ensure they see your message.
Announcements can include text, images, links, videos, and attachments, and you can also choose to allow comments or schedule them to post automatically at a future time.
In the below guides, we will show you the basics of using Canvas Announcements so they you can keep your students informed:
Canvas Announcements Index Page Guide
The Announcements Index Page in Canvas is where you can view, manage, and organise all the announcements in your course in one place.
From this page, you can create new announcements, edit or delete existing ones, pin important messages to keep them visible at the top, and schedule announcements to publish automatically at a later time.
The list is displayed with the most recent announcements first, making it easy for you. For more information on how to use the Announcement Index Page in Canvas, please visit the How do I use the Announcements Index Page? guide.

If you need to remove an announcement from your course, you can do this using the delete function.

If the announcement is deleted before it has been posted, it will not appear in the announcement list, and no notifications will be sent to students.
If the announcement is deleted after it has been posted, it will be removed from the Announcements page in Canvas.
