Traffic Lights

NEW: A vision for education and skills at Newcastle University: Education for Life 2030+

What are traffic lights in NULA?

  • Within the NULA system traffic lights are used to indicate how well a student is engaging in each of their modules by providing a quick visual indicator, green for high engagement, red for low engagement and amber for those in between.
  • For each metric that is produced within the system a traffic light colour is assigned.
  • The thresholds for each metric and the overall module summary are slightly different and can be found below.

On campus engagement

The thresholds for on campus engagement are shown on the right.

Note: The on campus engagement metrics are calculated based upon the last 2 weeks. They are taken from all timetabled events for active modules, including monitored and non-monitored events. They are not a student's formal attendance record.

Traffic Light Metric Values
Green 75% or greater
Amber Between 50% and 75%
Red Below 50%

Canvas

The thresholds for Canvas are shown on the right.

Note: The Canvas metrics are calculated based upon the last week of engagement.

Traffic LightMetric Values
Green 75% or greater
Amber Between 50% and 75%
Red Below 50%

Submissions

The thresholds for submissions are shown on the right.

Note: The submission metrics are calculated based upon the last 2 weeks.

Traffic LightMetric Values
Green 90% or greater
Amber Between 40% and 90%
Red Below 40%

Summary

The summary metric combines the metric scores for on campus engagement, Canvas and submissions into a single value, summarising a student engagement at a module level.

The thresholds for the summary metric are shown on the right.

Traffic Light Metric Values
Green 70% or greater
Amber Between 30% and 70%
Red Below 30%
