Inspera Deliver

NEW: A vision for education and skills at Newcastle University: Education for Life 2030+

Introduction

The Deliver module is the home for all exam settings, sometimes referred to as the ‘landing page’. It is where exam content (as question sets) are added into Inspera Digital Exams and where exam settings are amended.

Important note: This module is where exam set up is completed and the question set is attached. For summative centrally supported Inspera exams, the exams office set this up for you.

Access to the Deliver area

To access Deliver and gain necessary permissions, you do this from your Canvas assignment exam point link. If you’re creating a formative exam, you create the Canvas point; see the video guidance on the Using Inspera for formative or mock digital exams webpage. A video demo called Inspera In Person Non Locked Down Demo available.

When you, or a colleague, clicks the link in Canvas to the Inspera exam you will automatically be added as a 'Contributor' with all of the available roles, including 'Grader'.

Alternatively, if a colleague has previously accessed Inspera, you can manually add them as a Grader by searching for their name or University username. Inspera have guidance on how to add contributors to a test.

Important note: You must have teacher or teaching assistant access to the Canvas Module to access Inspera.

If you haven’t accessed Inspera via Canvas before please see Getting Started with Inspera webpage.

What would I use the Deliver module for?

For our most common type of Inspera digital exams, summative centrally-supported exams; you would not need to use the Deliver module. The set up is supported by the Central Exams Office.

Important note: You but you are invited to remove the automatically applied spell checker option, or to enable the similarity report (find guidance on this on this page).

If creating your own formative Inspera exams, you would use the Deliver module to:

    • Contributors are those who can access the Inspera exam, for our colleagues access is defined by Canvas permissions, please see the above access section titled ‘Access’
  • Set the duration of your exam (see ‘set up area’ on this page for more info)
  • Add test information (an optional feature).
    • If you’d like to add additional text based information available to your students you can do so within Deliver
    • Alternately you can also use the Canvas assignment text box
  • See a list of your students who have been enrolled to the exam (known as 'Candidates' on the system)
    • Please be aware that student enrolments are controlled by Canvas. If a student is missing from the candidate list, they’ll not have access to the current years Canvas module. Please refer to your School Education Team if enrolment changes are required.
  • To Grade student submissions
    • Via clicking the 'Open in Grade button'
  • Splitting marking between Graders using grading committees
  • Set up an assignment to be taken multiple times by your students using Multiple Attempts
    • Module teams can allow their students to take practice auto-marked Inspera exams repeatedly, either by unlimiting the access so a student can submit as many times as they wish, or by setting a defined number of retakes. Check out our Inspera Multiple Attempts webpage for more information.
  • Setting up feedback for your students
    • The minimal feedback requirement is a numeric exam total which (once marked and confirmed on Inspera, will port to Canvas Gradebook).
  • For formative use, predefined feedback enables students to see feedback on correct or incorrect answers, please see Content Creation Features webpage for more information.

We strongly recommend all users interested in formative digital exams using Inspera review our dedicated webpage: Using Inspera for formative or mock digital exams

What are the different settings areas within Deliver?

Setup area

This is where the exam date and times, question set and some other exam features are assigned. There are various drop down menus available but you do not need to select settings on the majority of these.

Templates

Importantly this is where a template is applied for your test which pre-selects a number of settings depending on the type of exam you are hosting:

1. Inspera in person exam template non lockdown - this template can be used for any formative or mock exams that you are hosting with students within your School.

2. Inspera in person exam template locked down - this template should only be used for in person exams that are centrally supported by the Central Exams Office with trained invigilators present. You should not use this template if you are hosting your own in-house exams without central support.

Select question set

You will need to know the exact name of your question set to search for it in the 'select question set' field. This is what attaches a particular question set to the exam.

Start and end times

The exam date and start time should be the time that you wish students to access and start their exam. For the exam end time, we recommend adding a buffer onto the time that you expect your exam to end to allow for any troubleshooting or extra time needs for your students. If you are hosting the exam in person with your students, we'd recommend adding on at least 1 hour (up to 3 hours). For example, if you have a 1 hour exam starting at 10:00, we'd recommend setting the exam time to at least 12:00 rather than 11:00.

Please note that we do not use the duration field for summative, centrally-supported digital exams - the invigilators in the room will advise students to submit and log off at the required end time.

Additional settings

Once you have applied your template, date, time and question set, there are a couple of other exam settings you can opt to select ahead of your exam taking place. This includes similarity checker and spell checker. You can enable similarity checker under the 'Security' drop down of the setup page. The option for spell checker is controlled under the 'Exam Day' drop down.

Once the necessary template is applied, we advise that you should not change any settings other than enabling similarity checker, turning off spell checker or setting any immediate feedback settings on formative mocks.

The setup area is also where you access:

  • Candidate lists - you can click on the candidates list post-exam to see who submitted, or pre-exam to see who is attached to the exam.
  • Grading committees - find out more via our Grading Committees webpage.
  • Feedback release settings - find out more via our Inspera Feedback Release webpage.
    • For summative, centrally-supported exams, feedback options are selected from the deliver area after the exam has taken place.
    • For formative or mock exams, you may wish to consider immediate feedback release.

Design area

For summative, centrally-support exams the Central Exams Office will set the settings as per our recommendations. This is ultimately where we are applying settings to your question set itself and how this will appear in the exam.

We recommend the following:

  • Question Numbering Style – Test sequential is the recommended option.
  • Hide navigation bar ❌
  • Disable navigate back button ❌
  • Table of contents ❌ - unless you are using Candidate Selected Questions
  • Hide question title ✅
  • Enable Flagging ✅
  • Enable notes and highlights ✅
  • Question maximum marks ✅
  • Show interaction accessibility guide ✅
  • Show progress indicator ❌

For 'numbering sequence' the option 'question sequential' is typically the chosen option on a question set. Although we mostly use sequential, there are other choices like alphanumeric.

Assessment Settings area

Please note that you must ensure that 'Do not use grade scale' is selected in the Assessment Settings area. Grade scale is an A, B C ranking which does not port to Canvas Gradebook if using Points.

Confirmation area

This confirmation area is designed to give you an overview of the date and time of your exam, plus confirmation of the question set name attended. Importantly, this is also the exam is activated. The exam must be activated for students to access it in Inspera.

You can deactivate (prior to the test start date and time) if you need to change settings. If you need to update your question set on an activated test, you will need to deactivate, remove and reattach the question set to ensure that the changes are reflected in your exam.

Once students have accessed and started the exam, no question set information can be altered. For example, if a mistake is found in a question, you would not be able to edit this. You would be able to edit auto-marking, including override, edit answer key and edit question weighting. You can find out about these options on Marking Exams in Inspera webpage.
