Using Vevox in Presentations

NEW: A vision for education and skills at Newcastle University: Education for Life 2030+

Introduction

Vevox offers several ways to combine presentation content and audience interaction. Alongside the established PowerPoint Add-In, users can now embed PowerPoint presentations directly into Vevox or create sessions using Vevox's non-polling presentation content. This guide outlines the differences between each approach and helps you choose the most suitable option for your session.

Vevox Present View vs PowerPoint Add-In

Before we jump in... What do we mean by 'Present View'? This is when you are using Vevox via ncl.vevox.com to access your session from the Vevox Dashboard. It is possible to present your polling content via the 'Present' option. Alternatively, you can present your Vevox content as slides in PowerPoint using the Vevox PowerPoint Add-In.

Using Vevox in Presentations

Vevox PowerPoint Add-In

It is possible to integrate your Vevox polls within your PowerPoint presentations. You can embed Vevox polls as slides amongst your presentation content. this refers to the newer Office 365 Add-in (found on the Home tab in PowerPoint), which works on both Windows and Mac.

🔗 You can also find out about how to host sessions in PowerPoint on the Vevox website.

When and why would you use this option?

  • If you are delivering a session, e.g. a lecture or training session, where you wish to use Vevox a couple of times to engage with your audience but most of your session consists of using PowerPoint slides for reference, this is the ideal option for you.
  • There are some bits of functionality that you cannot use with the PowerPoint Add-In which are currently only available in Present View rather than the Add-In:
    • This includes the Q&A functionality. You would need to have your session also open on ncl.vevox.com to interact with the Q&A.
    • Non-polling content, such as spin the wheel and the timer display, cannot be used in the PowerPoint Add-In.
    • Quick Polls and demographic segmentation are also only available in Present View.
  • If you are planning to use the Desktop version of PowerPoint only (Windows or Mac), and do not need to use the online web version, this option works for you.
  • All fonts, colours, and layout formatting are achieved through standard PowerPoint formatting and editing tools.
  • Results display within your slides and are also saved in your Vevox session report. The results can be shared with anyone with PowerPoint, whether they have a Vevox Add-in or not.
  • Normal non-interactive/informative/answer explanation slides can be mixed in between voting slides (but remember to keep the polling pair slides together.)
  • If you plan to deliver a lecture with a Vevox question at the start to engage students and check their understanding, and then repeat the same question at the end, then embedding Vevox questions in PowerPoint and using the add-in would work well for you.
    • Note: the specific built-in ‘before-and-after comparison’ view is currently only available in Present View, so if colleagues would like to show both sets of results side by side, the Present View route might suit a little better for this.

Use the PowerPoint Add-In option if...

- Most of your session is already built in PowerPoint

- You only need a few Vevox polls

- You are presenting from the desktop version of PowerPoint

- You do not need easy access to Q&A.

Embed PowerPoint Presentations in Present View

You can embed your PowerPoint slides within a Vevox session hosted on the website. Vevox allows you to add embed code for your presentation as a piece of non-polling content into your Vevox poll. Your existing slide deck stays exactly as it is but can be shared as content in Vevox.

The Vevox Office 365 Add-in does not currently work in PowerPoint Online but you can embed your PowerPoint Online presentation into Vevox using this option.

Note: PowerPoint Online supports most, but not all, animations – so it's worth doing a quick run-through before presenting.

🔗 You can find out about how to embed your PowerPoint Online presentation on the Vevox website.

When and why would you use this option?

  • Embedding a PowerPoint into Vevox allows users to deliver both presentation content and audience interaction from a single Vevox browser window.
  • If you wish to utilise all the features and functionality of the Vevox Present View whilst also using your PowerPoint slides as they are, this is the option for you.
  • You can access an embed code for your presentation which you can use to share the slides within your Vevox session delivered through the Present View.
  • If you wish to Present in the PowerPoint online web view, you would need to use this option as the Vevox PowerPoint Add-In only works in the desktop view (not web).
  • PowerPoint Live for Teams uses the online version of PowerPoint (and does not work for the PowerPoint Add-In) so if you wish to use PowerPoint slides and the present option for Teams, you should consider the embed option.
  • If you wish to use various Vevox questions, a PowerPoint Presentation and be able to easily access the Q&A area, this is the option for you. This reduces the need to switch between PowerPoint and Vevox, creating a smoother experience for both presenters and participants.

Use the Embed PowerPoint option if...

- You want to run your session entirely from Vevox

- You need Q&A and other Vevox features available throughout

- You are using PowerPoint Online or PowerPoint Live.

Non-Polling Presentation Content in Vevox Present View

The non-polling presentation content option allows you to add non-polling display content directly into your sessions, including text, images, animated GIFs or YouTube videos. The ‘Presentation Content’ is shared not only in your Present View screen but on every participant’s device too. It is also possible to add hyperlinks within the text that your participants can also select.

🔗 You can find out about non polling content on the Vevox website.

When and why would you use this option?

  • This option is ideal for users running lightweight sessions, workshops or meetings.
    • For example, if you are delivering an interactive session that may include various Vevox polling questions, and potentially some offline work, the non-polling presentation content is an ideal way of keeping all your online content is in one place and improving the flow of your presentations.
  • This can be useful for sessions where only a small amount of supporting content is needed between polls and interactive activities.
    • For example, if you do not require any sophisticated presentation design and only a few slides, this option is handy.
  • You can use all the content available in Vevox Present View as needed – this includes the Q&A, spin the wheel, and timer display which are not available for the PowerPoint Add-In.

Use Non-Polling Content option if...

- You do not need a separate PowerPoint presentation

- Your session is highly interactive

- You want all content created and delivered from Vevox.

Summary

The PowerPoint Add-in keeps Vevox inside PowerPoint, the embedded PowerPoint option brings PowerPoint into Vevox, and non-polling content lets you create presentation slides directly in Vevox without using PowerPoint.
