Peter and Norah Lomas PhD Scholarship in Economics
This scholarship is funded by a gift to the University by alumnus, Mr Peter Lomas. It provides funding opportunities for promising PhD candidates in Economics and Economics History.
Overview
Newcastle University Business School invites applications for a number of three-year PhD studentships.
These are open to full-time students undertaking a PhD in Economics or Economic History from September 2024.
The School particularly welcomes theoretical and/or quantitative applications that are aligned with one or more of the following key research themes:
- economics of safety, health, environment and risk
- behavioural and experimental economics
- labour, education and health economics
- macroeconomics, policies and institutions in open economic systems
- spatial, urban, regional, international and industrial economics
- applied time series econometrics
- finance, financial economics and financial econometrics
Value of the award and eligibility
The studentship will:
- cover PhD fees at the home rate
- provide an annual stipend for living costs
The stipend will be equal to that provided by UKRI scholarships1. It is paid to students in regular instalments. Fee increases over the years will also be covered by the scholarship.
International students
International students can opt for the scholarship to cover the fees in full at the international rate. This is £22,800 for 2024/25.
If you choose this option, you will receive a reduced annual stipend. The total value of the scholarship will be the same as for home students2.
Applicants only need to indicate their preferred choice after the notification of the award.
Opportunities
You can also apply for paid research or teaching opportunities when they arise in the School. These are paid at standard hourly rate, based on qualifications and experience.
We offer a stimulating work environment, which provides opportunities to present at national and international conferences and workshops. There are generously supported by the Business School PhD conference fund.
There are also opportunities to network with scholars and practitioners who regularly visit us.
Applicant specification
Applicants should hold a good Honours degree (either first-class or upper-second-class Honours). This should be in a relevant subject area, such as:
- economics
- statistics
- mathematics
You should also hold (or be predicted to receive by April 2024) a Master’s-level qualification (or equivalent). This should be in a relevant subject area and with a merit or higher.
The award is available to home and international candidates. If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of IELTS 7.0 (with minimum of 6.5 in all sub-skills).
Successful candidates are expected to actively participate in the intellectual life of the Economics Subject Group. This includes participating in internal and external research seminars provided by the group.

- the Business School
- the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
- the Northern Advanced Research Training Initiative network

- a full and detailed CV
- an outline research proposal of around 1,000 – 2,000 words
- a personal statement of around 500 words which sets out your reasons for applying
- your degree transcripts and certificates
- two letters of reference to support your academic credentials

We encourage you to approach a member of staff whose research interests align with your research area. You should discuss their availability to supervise you and champion your application.
