Description

The project aimed at providing an improved understanding of freak wave phenomenon.

This included:

  • Freak wave occurrence and characteristics
  • Technical contributions to the technology development of freak wave generation in laboratory environment

The project combined a novel theoretical and experimental approach. Using this approach they investigated the complex freak wave interaction with deep water offshore structures.

This leads to further development of advanced design methodology and guidelines of offshore structures. It includes improved performance and safety.

The results obtained from the study were theoretical and numerical. These along with experimental measurements provide a quality benchmark for future study.

Newcastle University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University academics supervised PhD students in the project. The join supervision strengthens our existing research collaboration.

It further creates a critical mass of expertise with upcoming young researchers. They will lead future research in this important area.
