Staff Profile
Balendra Vir Singh Chauhan
Research Assistant in Data Visualisation and Artificial Intelligence
Mr. Balendra V. S. Chauhan is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Data Visualisation and Artificial Intelligence for Digital Twin at Newcastle University, where he works at the intersection of environmental science, urban digital twins, and artificial intelligence. He is currently completing his Ph.D. at the Centre for Earth Observation Science, University of Brighton, with a thesis titled:
“Machine Learning Based Insights into Air Quality and Environmental Impacts: Temporal Evolution of Fine, Ultrafine, and Submicron Particulate Matter and Atmospheric Pollutants.”
His research focuses on the spatiotemporal behaviour of airborne pollutants and the application of machine learning and AI for air quality modelling, exposure assessment, and environmental health analysis.
Mr. Chauhan has extensive expertise in environmental data analysis and modelling, with a strong focus on AI-driven methods for pollution mitigation and predictive environmental assessment. He is highly skilled in spatial analysis using GIS tools, including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS, enabling the integration of geospatial data into environmental and public health studies. His work encompasses air pollution modelling, health impact assessments, and the development of digital twin frameworks for real-time environmental monitoring. He also has significant experience in exposure analysis of ultrafine particles, engine emission testing using alternative fuels, and the dynamics and sedimentation of microparticles in fluid environments.
He has published 35 high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific publications, including journal articles, conference papers, and a book titled "Prospects of Artificial Intelligence in the Environment", reflecting his strong contribution to interdisciplinary environmental research and innovation. Mr. Chauhan has also served as a Lecturer in Science and Engineering at Kaplan International College London, where he taught STEM subjects to international students. Previously, he worked as a Young Scientist at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland, where he conducted research on aerosol dynamics and fluid–particle interactions. Mr. Chauhan also worked as a Research Fellow at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Indian Institute of Petroleum, India, where he conducted research on engine emissions, catalytic converters, and alternative fuel technologies. He has also served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Invertis University, Bareilly, India, where he taught undergraduate engineering courses in Environmental engineering, Automobile engineering, and Internal combustion engines, and supervised final-year research projects.
At Newcastle, Mr. Chauhan contributes to the development of AI-enhanced digital twin systems to support urban sustainability, resilience, and environmental intelligence.
