Dr Evangelos Petropoulos

Background

Short bio

Dr Petropoulos is an expert in the field of wastewater treatment and environmental bio-engineering and biotechnology. He has a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Newcastle University and extensive industrial and academic experience, gained from working in China, Greece, Spain and the UK. 

He has conducted significant research and development work into both aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment for sufficient removal of organic pollutants and nutrients from municipal and industrial wastewater streams. His research focuses both in the bio-chemical processes as well as the bio-molecular, ecological characteristics that take place and are developed in such treatment systems. Lately he got involved in projects related to waste management and crop fertilization strategies (horticulture).

Dr Evangelos Petropoulos is currently the Technical Director of Premier Tech Aqua UK/IR  in County Durham.  He specializes in the design and construction of packaged water and waste water treatment solutions (up to 3000 PE) using innovative approaches; he also actively participates at the global R&D structure of the company (Headquarters at Riviere du loup, Canada). Dr Petropoulos focuses in the integration of numerous biochemical/molecular tools to design and develop of world leading environmental solutions.

Research

My research work focuses on anaerobic biological waste and wastewater treatment systems operating at challenging conditions (low temperature, presence of inhibitors, etc.). This includes not only the study of the process behavior of these systems but also the characteristics of the microbial communities that are developed in them at such conditions.

I also focus on the bio-conversion of waste streams to valuable by-products (i.e. biogas and fermentation intermediates), by trying to optimize processes using low-cost additives.

I also focus in quorum sensing/quenching molecules and bacteria to address membrane bio-fouling and improve wastewater treatment.

Special attention is also given in soil bio-conditioning for the improvement and the promotion of its cultivation capacity.
