Project description

I will devise a useful method to predict the gap resonance amplitudes for engineering application guidance.

Objectives

I will:

  • investigate the nonlinear behaviours of gap resonance between two floating vessels
  • discover the coupling effects between the gap resonance, the motions of the vessels and the connection systems.
  • carry out experimental model tests to study the influence of gap resonance related to the gap distance and wave direction

I will summarise a hydrodynamic law and conclusions related to the effect of gap resonance on multibody floating systems during side-by-side offloading.

Methodology

I am analysing the nonlinear coupling effects of gap resonance and its effects on the hydrodynamics of FLNG system and LNG Carrier in side-by-side offloading operations. I will do this using:

  • numerical analysis (scenario and comparative based analysis)
  • experimental model testing
  • theoretical analysis

Statistical data from the environment is important in understanding the behaviour of the vessel in different scenarios and sea states. I will use results from the different techniques for validation and conclusions. I will then propose a useful method for predicting gap resonance occurrence for engineering practice.
