Surveying and Mapping Science: BSc (Hons).

Peer to peer help is very strong within each cohort because of the small number of students on the course.

Choosing Newcastle

I had excellent support from the DSA services and Student Support within the wider University. I spent quite a bit of time away from Newcastle, and the staff were good at accommodating this.

The support these services provided meant I could focus on my studies within the Geomatics department.

About your course

A friend recommended the course to me. After further research and consideration, I liked the amount of practical work involved in the course.

There is a balanced split been both fieldwork and classroom-based study.

There’s an orientation trip to the Yorkshire Dales and two field courses to Kielder Water and the Lake District. The field courses are essential for understanding fieldwork requirements and procedures needed in the workplace. They make sure the course is vocational as well as academic.

Peer-to-peer help is very strong within each cohort because of the small number of students on the course. The staff get to know everyone on a personal level and therefore are willing to help you as and when required.

The number of specialities of the Geomatics staff means there is always someone who can help you out with your work. The year groups are small, but that also means it’s tight-knit. Because we all knew each other, everyone was willing to help each other out; something was required almost constantly.

I was lucky enough to be involved in research over the summer, which was really interesting. It wasn’t until writing my dissertation I realised the amount of research conducted by the staff within the Geomatics team at Newcastle. It was impressive once I realised this.

Living in Newcastle

The city is perfect for student life, but is also super easy to get away into the outdoors.

Clubs and societies

I was part of the Ski and Snowboard Club (NUSSC). It provided a great platform to compete at events in multiple countries.

Career aspirations

I got offered the job I am currently in through our industry fair (GENIE), which was also the case for a large percentage of the cohort. Though there is a large academic element to the course, it still provides vocational learning through field courses which greatly increases the employability of the students. The job opportunities provided are excellent.

The Geomatics department has excellent fieldwork facilities; the kit used was industry standard. This facility results in a smoother transition to industry.
