Investigation into mitochondrial dysfunction in facial appearance and ageing

Project description

We are capturing and analysing facial images with the potential to serve as a research tool. We will explore the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in premature ageing. We will develop a non-invasive diagnostic tool for improved characterisation.

We will:

  • establish reference facial image methodology using enhanced facial image capture
  • use the facial images for patients and controls
  • implement novel algorithms for feature extraction to estimate ‘perceived age’ estimation
  • classify images using phenotype versus genotype correlates
  • evaluate ‘perceived age’ versus actual age

Qualifications

  • MSc in Communication and Signal Processing from Newcastle university
  • Bachelor in Electronic Information Engineering from Central South University in China
