Project description

I will improve the propulsive efficiency and manoeuvrability of an autonomous underwater vehicle. An oscillating flexible propulsor propels this bioinspired vehicle.

Methodology and objectives

I will develop a mathematical model to calculate hydrodynamic forces on a bioinspired AUV. I will use blade element theory in a MATLAB script to simulate these forces. I will also design and develop a physical model. I will operate this model in a towing tank experiment to determine the hydrodynamic derivatives of the vehicle. I will use the experimental results to describe the motion of the vehicle during forward motion and during manoeuvres.

I will investigate marine species to understand how they match their body structure with functionality. This provides them with the desired performance of engineered vehicles.

I will develop mathematical models that describe the motion of a bioinspired AUV. I will develop a physical model for experimental purposes, to determine hydrodynamic forces on a bioinspired AUV.

I will use smart materials to develop a propulsor with desired thrust and efficiency.

Result

My research will provide a hydrodynamic coefficient for a bioinspired AUV. It will also help to explain the forces of interaction of the body, fin and tail of the bioinspired AUV.
