Becoming a Peer Mentor is a rewarding experience that hones crucial skills like leadership, communication, problem-solving, and empathy. It's an opportunity to make a positive impact and support fellow students.

Being a Peer Mentor

I decided to become a Peer Mentor after having a great experience with my own mentor at Newcastle University. They really helped me settle into life in Newcastle and handle my tough course. I wanted to pay it forward and offer the same kind of support to new students joining the university.

As a Peer Mentor, I advised my mentees to not be afraid to ask questions, either of us, the professors, teaching assistants or anyone on campus. On the academic side, I shared my first-year experiences with them and shared some tips and techniques that helped me do well. I was also able to share my insights about the various social activities on campus - the clubs and societies, volunteering opportunities and most importantly sign posted them to various services and facilities available on campus.

A mentee can expect their mentor to be proactive, take initiative to organise short meet ups or catch-up sessions. They can expect their mentors to be active listeners who give support and advise when facing challenges by sharing and relating to personal experiences or guiding them to relevant services. Most importantly, the mentees should expect their mentors to create a positive environment where they feel comfortable seeking help.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

Being a Peer Mentor taught me some valuable transferable skills that I can use in many areas of life. I got better at leading and organizing meetings, which boosted my leadership skills. Talking with new students and helping them with their problems improved my communication skills. Plus, figuring out solutions to their challenges sharpened my problem-solving abilities. Most importantly, being a Peer Mentor taught me to be more empathetic and understanding of different people’s experiences. These skills aren't just useful for mentoring but for all situations in life.

Becoming a Peer Mentor is a rewarding experience that hones crucial skills like leadership, communication, problem-solving, and empathy. It's an opportunity to make a positive impact by guiding and supporting fellow students through their challenges. If you're considering it, go for it – the skills you'll gain are invaluable.

It was one of the best feelings ever to be nominated for Peer Mentor of the Year! To know that you have made such a positive impact on your mentees and receive their appreciation is a very happy feeling. It not only gave me a sense of achievement but also showed me that I had truly bonded with my mentees!
