Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.

Stage 1

Optional modules 

You choose one optional module. We recommend the following choice:

• ARA1028 Prehistoric Britain
• CAG1001 Beginners’ Greek in Action 1
• CLA1001 Beginners’ Latin in Action 1
• SOC1027 Comparing Cultures

Other optional modules may also be available.

Stage 2

Compulsory modules

• ARA2091 Archaeologies of the Roman Empire: The Roman World from Augustus to Justinian
• ARA2100 Fieldwork Methods and Artefact Analysis
• CAH2006  In Alexander’s Footsteps: Greeks and Macedonians 400-200 BC
• CAH2007 Caesar’s Gift: Rome under the Emperors

Optional modules 

You take one of the following Archaeology (A) or Ancient History (AH) pathway modules:

Pathway A

• ARA2001 Archaeological Theory and Interpretation
• ARA2011 Later European Prehistory
• ARA2101 Artefacts
• ARA2097 Historical Archaeology of the Modern World (post 1492)

Pathway AH

• CAH2010 Women in the Ancient World

You also take a further module which may be from the list above, or from another area of the University. We also recommend the following module:

• CAC2057 Greek and Roman Music

Stage 3

Compulsory modules

You choose one of the following modules:

• ARA3001 Dissertation in Archaeology
• ARA3002 Dissertation in Ancient History and Archaeology

You choose one module from the Archaeology pathway (A), one from the Ancient History pathway (AH), and one or two further modules from either pathway:

• ARA3100 Later Mediterranean Prehistory
• ARA3114 Regionality and the Fall of Rome

Pathway AH

• CAH3009 The Emperor and the Empire
• CAH3015 The Persian Empire
• CAH3030 The Jews in the Greek and Roman World
• CAH3033 The Fall of the Roman Republic

If you only take three modules from the lists above, you take a further optional module to bring your total to 120 credits. We recommend the following, though other optional modules may also be available:
