As a truly civic university we have a strong sense of place and we welcome the local community on to our campus throughout the year to enjoy the cultural events and attractions on offer, many of which are free, including:
The multiple-award winning Great North Museum: Hancock which houses world class natural history, archaeological and ethnographic collections, a specialist library and a planetarium, as well as a large-scale, interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall
the Hatton art gallery, displaying a permanent collection of artworks, ranging from the Renaissance to the twentieth century
the independent Northern Stage theatre, the North East’s largest producing theatre company
free public lectures featuring an impressive line-up of speakers from public life. Recent speakers include artist Grayson Perry, the biographer Claire Tomalin and the Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti
free weekly lunchtime concerts by professional musicians drawn from a wide range of genres
Sustainability is high on our agenda, and not simply because of our world-leading research. We are committed to the notion of a sustainable campus, and we promote initiatives to encourage our students and staff to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, including:
a cross-campus recycling scheme
lighting controls in common-use areas of many of our buildings to reduce energy consumption
monitoring of energy
sustainable transport schemes
We have joined the EcoCampus scheme, which allows universities to be recognised for addressing key issues of environmental sustainability.
