NUMed Malaysia Campus
Newcastle is the first UK university to develop an overseas campus offering full UK medical degrees in country. It aims to equip local and international students with the skills to support Malaysia's health service. Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) campus officially opened on 1 November 2011. 
NUMed campus
The purpose-built campus is based in EduCity in Johor. It forms one of the main international learning facilities of this ground-breaking educational complex.
Building of NUMed began in 2008 and now the campus includes innovative teaching and learning facilities with state-of-the-art equipment.
NUMed Malaysia programmes
Seven Newcastle University medics work at the campus alongside 50 Malaysian and international staff. The NUMed Malaysia MB BS programme is equivalent to that delivered in the UK. It leads to the award of a Newcastle University MB BS (Bachelor of Medical Sciences) degree. The programme comes under the UK's General Medical Council's (GMC) robust approval and quality assurance framework.
NUMed has already enrolled 60 local undergraduates to train as doctors from this year. A further 25 students will join NUMed's third year having commenced their studies in Newcastle, UK. By 2017 it is forecast that 900 medical students will be studying at the campus.
NUMed Malaysia will initially offer MB BS degrees in medicine and its intake is expected to grow to 180 over the first five years. BSc degrees in the biomedical sciences will be offered in 2013 along with a selection of Masters degrees. As the Malaysian campus matures, further programmes may be added in response to regional priorities and demand.
