Student Community Action Newcastle (SCAN)

SCAN exists to serve the community by integrating students at Newcastle University within quality volunteering projects. Their mission statement is, 'To match the needs of the local community with the skills and enthusiasm of student volunteers'. Visit the SCAN website.

Students in the Community and Student Tutoring

Students in the Community

Placement opportunities are offered in a wide-range of settings such as prisons, hospital schools, local media, after-school IT clubs and museum education. Students gain practical experience and are encouraged to develop and promote their transferable skills.

Student Tutoring

Students act as teaching assistants in local primary or secondary schools or FE colleges. They work alongside teachers to help to raise the achievements and aspirations of learners. Students gain practical experience and are encouraged to develop and promote their transferable skills.

Both opportunities are offered as part of the Careers Service Career Development Module.

Student Associates Scheme

The Scheme is a local project run jointly between Northumbria University and Newcastle University and is funded nationally by the Training and Development Agency for Schools. It creates opportunities for students to:

  • gain classroom experience
  • learn and develop skills alongside teachers, in priority subject areas
  • raise the aspirations of local school students

The Alumni Association Student Initiative Fund

ncl+ brings together groups across the University that offer opportunities for students to improve and add to their skills, increasing the value of their time at university.
