About the Course

Groundwater Modelling

An understanding of groundwater is essential for water resources management and ecological impacts. We need to understand its impact on issues such as water quality, flooding, subsidence, construction dewatering, and ground source energy.

Groundwater modelling brings together conceptual understanding and quantitative data in a systematic framework to help us understand and manage groundwater systems.

The course will provide you with practical skills and an understanding of subsurface flow regimes. You'll find out:

  • how to build conceptual models of a groundwater system
  • how you can use appropriate software to test and refine your understanding

We'll provide you with a sound introduction to MODFLOW and other related packages with industry-standard graphical user interfaces.

We'll focus on developing your practical skills and knowledge, and you'll spend significant time with hands on examples.

The course is focused strongly on providing regulators, developers, engineers, and scientists with the skills and tools necessary to conceptualise a groundwater system and to develop numerical models of the groundwater resources and flows, and interactions with groundwater bodies.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is suitable for people who may commission or use results from groundwater models as well as those needing to develop their own models.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Course Objectives

By the time you've finished the course, you'll understand:

  • good practice in groundwater flow and transport modelling
  • the nature of conceptual, mathematical and numerical models of groundwater systems
  • the use of data in groundwater modelling
  • the processes of model calibration, validation and sensitivity analysis

You'll be able to:

  • use numerical models to test conceptual understanding of groundwater systems
  • set up and run groundwater flow problems using MODFLOW within industry-standard graphical user interfaces
