Sustainable Livelihoods
Our research is enabling sustainable livelihoods and empowering the marginalised in urban and rural communities. Combining expertise in education, nutrition, medicine and business, the aim of this network is to consider the enablers and barriers to sustainable livelihoods for urban and rural areas in low and middle-income countries.

Impact
Global Challenge
Cities in the developing world are projected to grow by more than 2 billion people over the next three decades. This presents both economic challenges and opportunities. Enabling people to work is crucial to socio-economic development of any country. Productive activities are not possible without basic infrastructure, education and environmental health services.
An example of our work is focussed on Delhi, India. Our research there is interested in distinctive informal low-income settlements, such as unauthorised colonies, Jhuggi Jhopri or squatter settlements and resettlement colonies.
How we are making a difference
- leading research to identify the enablers and barriers to sustainable livelihoods
- fostering sustainable livelihoods through employment and enterprise
- joining together multiple sets of expertise in engineering, education, nutrition, medicine and business to end poverty
- maximise opportunities around local action through the development of a ‘community charter’ and ‘community development plan’ and training workshops
- investigating whether the provision of services has bearing on labour and enterprise issues for a demographic distribution of community members
