Introduction to Practical Hydraulics

Providing an accessible and practical introduction to hydraulics and how we can use it to solve environmental engineering problems.

A sound grasp of practical hydraulics has always been useful for those working in the water industry, but a new realisation of the necessity to be very careful with energy costs has reinforced this need.

All entrants to the industry should be aware of the precepts of sound hydraulic design, without necessarily being skilled hydraulic engineers. However, many don't have a traditional engineering training. They are unaware of, and even intimidated by, the kind of hydraulics that they would find extremely useful.

This course is an accessible and practical introduction to the area. We introduce you to the founding concepts of hydraulics. We'll show you how you can apply these concepts to problems in drainage, sewer design, water supply, and the specification of pumps.

You'll also get a brief glance into more advanced aspects, such as computational fluid dynamics.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is suitable for those with no prior exposure to the field, and will also provide a refresher for those who have studied hydraulics, but have not had much experience of simple hydraulic problem solving.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Introduction to Practical Hydraulics

Course Objectives

When you've finished this course, you'll:

  • understand the governing precepts of hydraulics
  • have an awareness of the more advanced tools applicable to hydraulic design in the water sector
  • understand the relationships between hydraulic factors in environmental systems and energy consumption

You'll also be able to:

  • perform simple calculations related to hydraulic flow, pressure and energy as they pertain to transmission in water and waste systems
  • design simple pipe and open channel systems
  • select and operate pumps correctly

Course Outline

  • Conceptual basics: Statics, the conservation of mass and energy (Bernoulli's equation), ideal and non-ideal flow Reynolds number.
  • Pipe flow: empirical and theoretical equations, simple pipes, branched networks, circular networks, flow measurement.
  • Open channel flow: Manning's equation and transport of solids, the design of simple sewers and drainage networks and flow measurement.
  • Pumps: pump types, optimal selection and management;
  • An introduction to contemporary tools in hydraulic, network optimisation, and computational fluid dynamics.

This course is also delivered as a Module (code CEG8102) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment. Optional laboratory sessions

There are two afternoons of optional laboratory sessions:

  • Lab demonstration: Energy Loss in Pipelines and Open Channels
  • Lab exercise (part of coursework): Energy Loss in Pipelines and Flow Measurement With Weirs

      • We hope to offer CPD delegates the option of attending laboratory sessions, but can only confirm this when capacity is known. This optional element of the course attracts an additional fee of £175.

We offer a 30 percent discount to full time students and to Newcastle University staff.

The course fee includes tuition, course materials, lunch and refreshments.
