Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.
Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.
The following three modules introduce you to the scientific study of human language:
You choose one of the following Level B language modules:
You also choose a second language to study, either at post A level (or equivalent) standard or beginners'/GCSE level.
All Level A language modules are taken in pairs:
You also have a choice of optional modules to match the language you are studying and to bring your total to 120 credits:
You choose one of the following modules:
You continue to develop skills in your first chosen language:
You also continue with your second language, building on your level of language study at Stage 1.
You complement your language study with one cultural module for each language studied.
You choose one further module from the following list:
You spend your year abroad studying at one of our partner universities, on a work placement, or a combination of the two.
You can spend the whole year in one country or divide the year between two countries where your chosen languages are spoken.
If you want to study Chinese or Japanese at Stage 4 you must spend this year studying in China or Japan and use the summer vacation to visit French- German-or Spanish-speaking countries.
During your year abroad, you take the following compulsory module:

You continue to study your chosen languages with modules that build on the level of fluency achieved on your year abroad.
You choose one of the following Level D language modules:
You choose two or three modules from the list below.
You chose optional modules from the following Level C or Level D options to match your level of language study. If you are taking a Level C language you may only chose one level C option.
