Aims

This module aims to give students:
•       an advanced understanding of professional translating practice from English to Chinese
•       experience of dealing with problems in translating at the advanced level
•       guidance in developing sufficient background knowledge in at least two subject areas of professional
translating

Outline Of Syllabus

The module is divided into a number of blocks of different subject areas according to what areas have been chosen to specialise. These are normally economics, finance and business, literature, politics, law, science, and technology. Other subject areas are possible depending on the demand. The themes and topics of individual lessons may be altered according to students’ actual progress in class.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

At least two specialist subject areas must be studied over the semester. The module talk gives an overview of the module. The lectures provide guidance/input in translating skills and theories. The workshops/seminars can provide opportunities for students to discuss with their peers about their own work relevant to their chosen subject areas. The academic skill activities give student opportunities to apply research skills in their translations. The surgery session serves to answer student queries relating to the module. The independent study enables students to prepare, practise, and perform translating tasks.

The surgery session at the end of the semester will remain online as it showed to be effective and students appreciated this online element.
