John Pain Scholarship 2023-24

This scholarship has funding for a stage 1 and stage 3 undergraduate student, who need financial support for their studies.
This scholarship is for an Agriculture-related course in our School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.
Stage 1 undergraduate student
Only 1 scholarship is available for our stage 1 student.
The award is a one-off payment of £3,000.
Stage 3 undergraduate student
Only 1 scholarship is available for our stage 3 student.
The award is a one-off payment of £2,000.
Applications are by competitive process.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must be:
- a UK based undergraduate student, entering stage 1 or stage 3 of study in 2023-24.
- registered on one of the following courses for academic year 23-24;
- Agriculture (including with Agronomy/Animal Production Science/Farm Business Management)
- Applied Plant Science
- Agri-Business Management
- Food Business Marketing and Management
- Countryside Management
- Rural Studies or Sustainable Land and Business Management.
- able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include:
- Unable to cover basic cost of living;

Charles Letts Memorial Scholarship

How to Apply
The scholarship will be awarded to one student who comes from an underprivileged background. Applications will be judged on academic potential, enthusiasm, and aptitude for the chosen programme of study.

Wood Fund Bursary 2022-23

Details
Bursaries are available to undergraduate students in the Engineering degree programmes:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
Awards of £1,000 - £2,000 may be made for one year, with the option of reapplying for successive years.
Application is by competitive process. The fund awards bursaries to all and seeks to obtain a diverse balance of bursary recipients.
Female students are currently under-represented in the bursary awards so for this round we invite only female students to apply. We particularly welcome applications from female students from black and ethnic minority communities who are also currently under-represented in the bursary awards.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must:
- be an undergraduate home student in stage 1 of study
- have been resident in one of the following postcodes for 5+ years NE, DH, TS, SR, DL
- be studying in an Engineering degree programme, including Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering
- have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award. This could include being unable to cover basic costs, or having to work in excess of 10 hours per week in a job
Process for application
Applications must be submitted no later than 17 March 2023.
Applications will be judged on academic potential, enthusiasm and aptitude for the chosen programme of study. Applicants should use the full word count available to state their case for support.
Recipients are required to provide proof of enrolment, a supporting statement from their tutor and an annual update on their progress. They should also be available to meet the fund advisor if requested.

This bursary is in loving memory of a dear mother, grandmother, and History graduate from King’s College Durham (now Newcastle University).
Mary Spencer was a dedicated, creative teacher of many subjects, including history, for almost fifty years. As the wife of an RAF Officer, she taught throughout the UK, Zimbabwe, Cyprus, and Libya.

Overview
The Flying Start financial bursary is aimed at supporting students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with the day-to-day costs of university life, to support our students to be the best they can be.

To be eligible for these this bursary you must have:
- ‘Home Funding’ status, which means you’re living in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and EU nationals with settled status in the UK
- applied to study on the Flying Start Accounting undergraduate degree programme (and subsequently successfully start on the programme in September 2022)
- have a household income of less than £35,000 per annum, as assessed by Student Finance (this will be assessed once you are accepted onto the degree programme and apply to Student Finance)
- demonstrate a commitment to a career in Audit at PwC during the assessment process

Undergraduate Music Scholarships
Details
Four £3,000 scholarships are available to new undergraduate students entering a degree offered by Newcastle University’s International Centre for Music Studies in September 2023.
We will award the music scholarship in the first year of study and pay it in two equal installments, the first in December 2023 and the second in April 2024.
Eligibility
To be considered for a scholarship, you must hold an offer of admission for
- BA Honours Music (W300)
- BMus Honour Music (W304)
- BA Honours Contemporary and Popular Music (W301)
- or BA Honours Folk and Traditional Music (W344)
You must have also attended an Interview Day (academic interview and audition), and be a new UK, EU or international student commencing your studies in 2023.
Successful candidates may not be in receipt of other funding from the University.
How to apply
You do not need to apply for these scholarships. Eligible candidates will automatically be considered for a scholarship on the basis of their academic merit, musical track record and performance at an Interview Day.

Dr Marian Tuszewski Troy and Professor R. B. Green Memorial Bursary
Provided by
This award has been agreed following a donation to Newcastle Medical School, made by the family of Dr Marian Tuszewski Troy and in remembrance of R. B. Green who supported Dr Troy to enter Newcastle Medical School at the end of WW2. The award is intended to support a promising medical student who might otherwise struggle to meet the costs associated with the MB BS programme. We encourage students from all nationalities to apply, but preference will be given to qualifying students from Poland or Eastern Europe.

The Connor King Foundation. The scholarship was established in memory of Connor King, who died while in Stage 3 of his Dental Surgery BDS degree at Newcastle’s School of Dental Sciences. He was a very enthusiastic young man, with a kind heart and passion for helping those less fortunate than himself.

Two scholarships are available to students entering year 1 on the Dental Surgery BDS degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences in 2023-24. Scholarships are for £1,000 per annum each for stages 1 to 4.
The Jimmy Steele Scholarship was set up to keep Jimmy’s name alive in the Dental School. He was a much loved head of school and professor and if he was still alive, students would have had a taste of his distinctive and entertaining teaching style. Since his death from a brain tumour in 2017, Newcastle University along with Jimmy’s family and friends have been raising money to help students who might have financial stress in accessing a degree. The hope is that the support will go a little way to smoothing a pathway to becoming a great dentist!
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must:
- Have been accepted to study or be in stage 1 on the Dental Surgery BDS degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences in 2023-24;
- Preference will be given to home students, ordinarily resident in the UK;
- Not be in receipt of any other scholarships or bursaries from Newcastle University.
How to apply
Scholarships will be awarded to 2 students on the programme who come from a widening participation background and/or have low household incomes. No application is necessary.
You will be informed by email or the Student Financial Support Team by December 2023 if you were successful in receiving the scholarship.
All scholarship recipients are asked to provide:
- an introductory profile when they first receive the award
- an annual update report in Spring/Summer to inform their donor of their progress.

Up to five scholarships are available to students in Year 1 of the undergraduate Dental Surgery BDS programme at Newcastle University, commencing their degree in September 2023.
The award amount is £1,000 per year for your first four years of undergraduate study.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award you must:
- be in Year 1 of the Dental Surgery BDS undergraduate degree programme in the School of Dental Sciences in 2023-24
- have been resident in the North East for five years or more. Postcodes include those beginning: NE, SR, DH, DL, TD, TS
- be from an underprivileged background and/or with low household incomes
