Aims
Students will explore different stages of research and development in the field of technology enhanced language learning (TELL) and their relevance to different learning theories. Students will use a range of language learning software, and web-based resources for language learning in the classroom. They will consider some of the advantages and limitations of using technology and the internet for language learning, and will develop an understanding of how computer- and web-based resources can be used by language learners and teachers. Students will evaluate computer- and web-based language learning materials, and will learn how to design and produce their own web-pages and computer- and web-based language learning materials using basic authoring tools.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lecture videos provide an introduction to the weekly content, establish a basic level of understanding of the topic, and signal areas for individual further study and essential and further reading.
Smal group teaching offer an opportunity for further exploration, discussion, and personal reflection, through small group activities. Seminar activities are often linked to post-lecture reading. Students will then put what they have learnt into practice, by developing online teaching materials in the weekly PC lab workshops.
Structured Guided Learning activities provide students with weekly opportunities to consolidate learning through guided tasks linked to the weekly topic.
Independent study will enable wider reading, further personal self-reflection and assignment preparation.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The skills outcomes (ability to design, produce and evaluate online teaching materials) will be assessed through production of the 5 minute online learning activity. The knowledge outcomes (understanding theory behind TELL, and relative strengths and limitations of various types on online teaching) will be assessed through the written reflection.
