Aims

The aim of this module is to teach students generic principles for design and evaluation of computer and communication systems, including large scale enterprise systems and other Internet-based systems. The course aims at providing rigorous approaches, including those based on quantitative measurable techniques. Students that have taken this module will learn about a set of techniques and tools that makes them better equipped to design large systems, assess problems in existing systems and dimension or configure existing systems.

Outline Of Syllabus

Model-based approaches to system evaluation
Quantitative approaches throughout system design, deployment and lifecycle
Metrics, metrology and computer system measurement approaches

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures will be used to introduce the learning material and for demonstrating the key concepts by example. Students are expected to follow-up lectures within a few days by re-reading and annotating lecture notes to aid deep learning.

This is a very practical subject. Students are expected to spend time on coursework outside timetabled practical classes.

Students aiming for 1st class marks are expected to widen their knowledge beyond the content of lecture notes through background reading.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Description Semester When Set Comment
Prof skill assessmnt1MTool exercise - Individual exercise to install and use modelling tool
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The coursework assesses practical application of taught material by developing and analysing models using an appropriate modelling tool.
