Aims
A1. Understand the Marine Transport market and the role of the marine technologists in it.
A2. Identify the factors that result in seaborne trade.
A3. Link different trade patterns to different shipping services
A4. Show how ships are operated owned and chartered to fulfil that demand.
A5. To enable students to understand the concept of a market and price formation in shipping.
A6. To identify the structure of ship operating costs and the relationship with different chartering
arrangements.
A7. To enable students to appreciate the time value of money and develop simple loan scenarios.
A8. To give an introduction to investment appraisal in shipping.
Outline Of Syllabus
The module provides an understanding of the marine transport market and how different business sectors are organised.
Main topics include: world trade; freight markets and demand for ships; organisation of tramp and liner shipping; major bulk commodities; general cargo and liner trade; choice of ship types; service performance of ships; introduction to markets; finance and loans; investment appraisal.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The use of lectures and the provision of lecture material as the principle teaching method is an effective means to provide students with the acquisition of the sizeable and detailed knowledge base and facilitate the understanding of the module material. Tutorials allow in person interaction, reinforcing knowledge and providing feedback.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The examination allows students an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and the possession of subject-specific insights.
The exam will require three questions from four to be answered, each question comprising a descriptive part and a numerical question, based on the teaching and the intended learning outcomes. Numerical techniques will be practiced in the formative assessments (C1, C2, C4, C15)
