Aims

The aim of this module is for students to develop their practical skills and demonstrate practical competency in the techniques that are explained during the three taught modules using simulation equipment. This simulation-based module forms the first part of the practical element of the PG Certificate and is completed prior to undertaking supervised clinical practice (MED8311 – Clinical Practice 2).

Specialist simulation equipment will be used to enable to trainees to practice their skills in:-

A.       Tunnelled and non-tunnelled central vascular access for haemodialysis.
B.       Renal Biopsy – Native and Transplant
C.       Point of Care US
D.       PD catheter insertion

Outline Of Syllabus

Tunnelled and non-tunnelled central vascular access:

Procedure of establishing vascular access - landmark method approach


Renal biopsy:

Performing a renal biopsy procedure

Handling of biopsy equipment

Handling of biopsy samples


Peritoneal Dialysis Access:

Procedure of performing PD catheter insertion - landmark method, US guided method peritoneal catheter insertion.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Students will undertake supervised hands-on training using specialist hifidelity simulation equipment within the interventional nephrology facility at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Expert tuition and practical guidance will be provided by Consultant-level medical supervision using a rapid cycle deliberate practice style approach in order to successfully achieve Learning Outcomes 1 – 7.

Practical experience applying the skills learned during the individual modules and simulation training will be undertaken at the students’ host Trust. Individual academic support and supervision sessions will give students the opportunity to discuss their progress. Reflective practice gives student the opportunity to reflect on their clinical training and practice.

Surgery sessions will promote student engagement in their learning and will provide them with the opportunity to come together as a group to discuss taught and clinical issues around the subject area of the module. Q & A sessions will allow students to discuss issues around their learning and seek advice from the programme team.

Tripartite meetings with the Trainee. Educational Supervisor (Work-based) and Academic Supervisor will take place twice during the academic year to review the trainee's progress.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The professional skills assessment provides the opportunity for the programme team to critically appraise a student’s performance during the delivery of key interventional nephrology practical techniques in a simulated setting thereby confirming successful achievement of each of the module Learning Outcomes.

The professional competency log will be used by students’ to record relevant clinical activity whenever they perform key interventional nephrology procedures. The professional competency log will not only act as a record of activity but will also contain short reflective accounts that will be written by the student following each procedure. This collection of activity records, reflective statements and work-based supervisor confirmation will demonstrate successful achievement of the module Learning Outcomes.

In order to pass this module students must demonstrate safe practice in a simulated clinical environment. Students are required to pass the Professional Skills Assessment and submit their portfolio and have achieved competency under supervision in all clinical activities undertaken.
