Aims
To develop an understanding of the concept of ‘home’ in the broadest design sense and the needs of the vulnerable communities in particular.
To understand complications of site specifics (infill, working with historic buildings etc)
Come to terms with working with an “imagined scenario” real community to provide appropriate housing and/or other amenities that meet their needs
Understand the complexity of the location in physical and socioeconomic terms and how designers facilitate places of encounter for different populations.
Outline Of Syllabus
The module explores the complexities of providing a stimulating, enjoyable, safe, appropriate and desirable homes and other environments for vulnerable persons in established settings in the community. It challenges students to think out of the box in relation to that provision at the meso and micro levels. Moreover, to think more holistically about the place of vulnerable persons housing in the surrounding settlement and how this might be more fully integrated into the everyday life of the community, by providing ‘places of encounter’ by:
• Analysing the site and formulating a brief design that emerges from a robust understanding of the site, the end users, onsite staff and trustees in a collaborative way
• More broadly analysing the site within its context – and look for potentials to more fully integrate the site in the life of surrounding communities
• Identify ways to provide a stimulating, enjoyable, safe and appropriate home for residents
• Come up with imaginative design ideas for the site demonstrating a strong rationale and fit between the proposal; the place, and aspirations of the whole community.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
This is a studio module so most teaching involves teaching and individual study. There are some short lectures introducing key issues to the students which they will then be able to use independent study and literature provided to deepen their understanding off.
There will be workshops related to extracting information from partner organisations and working collaboratively in producing dissemination material.
Interim crits will help advance the design work by receiving feedback from the teaching team and external/guest partners/lecturers.
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Other Assessment
Description | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
Design/Creative proj | 1 | M | 30 | Produce graphic/video analysis – group work |
Design/Creative proj | 1 | M | 70 | Final individual project involving drawing illustrations and 3d representation of proposals |
Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.
Description | Semester | When Set | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Design/Creative proj | 1 | M | Interim presentation of design work |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The assessment is appropriate to design projects and involves also assessing the students’ outputs of engagement as well as research through the assessment of the production of a video or online-report. The assessment reflects the learning and skills outcomes.
