ARA2000 : Advanced Fieldwork Training

  • Offered for Year: 2020/21
  • Module Leader(s): Dr Caron Newman
  • Owning School: History, Classics and Archaeology
  • Teaching Location: Off Campus
Semesters
ECTS Credits: 0.0

Aims

This module provides students with a continuation to the introduction to the practice of archaeological fieldwork delivered in semester 3 of their first year. It is delivered off-campus as students will participate in archaeological field projects. These projects involve archaeological excavation, post excavation or survey, building on the skills and techniques learned in year 1 fieldwork and on the classroom-based learning from ARA2012, delivered in semester 1 of year 2. In exceptional cases agreed with the DPD and Fieldwork Officer (e.g. due to medical grounds) students may instead participate in archaeological work where the field site is a museum or laboratory instead of an excavation or field survey.

Outline Of Syllabus

Fieldwork is learnt through a process of apprenticeship, in which students gain practical experience of carrying out tasks on an archaeological site. The range of tasks is outlined below.
