Aims

To understand the fundamental concepts of a GIS and its uses and applications.
To gain hands-on experience of using a GIS to solve real-world problems.

This module introduces students to Geographical Information Systems and associated data types and formats. GIS uses a wide range of data to analyse data spatially and produce stunning visual outputs. Using GIS we can analyse data to look for spatial correlations and patterns and link data that shares a spatial location.

Outline Of Syllabus

What is GIS: Who uses it, why they use it, what you can do. What is different about spatial?
Data models for Spatial data: Discrete vs continuous field mapping;
Thematic Mapping: types of thematic maps, uses of thematic maps, classification models for thematic maps;
Continuous data: Sampling and interpolation, DTMs, heights and volumes;
Vector Data Attributes and databases: Data management and attribute data;
Data formats and data providers: standards, common formats, data providers (formal and informal);
Processing and modelling in GIS; Network analysis;
GIS interfaces: CAD/BIM;
Web mapping and Location based services;
Visualisation, design and output from GIS.

Practicals
Getting to know GIS. Basic map layouts, data loading, navigation, basic thematic maps
Thematic mapping. Comparison of classification types
Raster analysis: Multi criteria Evaluation for site selection (slope, soil, geology, proximity etc.)
Using 3D data – calculating volumes, cut and fill using GIS

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Students are introduced to core concepts in lectures and this is practised through assessed practicals. The practicals have been developed to enable the students to work independently. Each practical session has a submission that repeats the core exercises carried out in the session.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The emphasis on practical work reinforces the core skills required for further advanced study. Basic data handling, data processes and map production are reinforced in each practical with additional data types/formats and processes being introduced. The digital based examination provides assesses specific knowledge of GIS processes and spatial data types and formats. The students will have an opportunity to compare processes, data and operations that best meet the needs of real world problems. The examination synthesises specific knowledge from lectures and the practical application of theories through use cases and scenarios.
