Aims

The aim is to give students experience in field mapping of geological formations and structures. This module is a key aspect of the degree and will provide students with the key field skills needed their future careers. They will also learn to work successfully as a team.

Outline Of Syllabus

Students will spend 7 days producing a geological map of a 5km2 area on the Island of Arran. The students will work in groups of 3 and map the outcrops in the area. They will identify all the rock types observed, map their location, relationship to other rock formations and identify and map the presence of geological structures.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This is a field based module with the students learning key skills in the field. The teaching hours indicate the need for 2 academic members of staff to be operating in the field during the geological mapping portion of the module. Student achievement will be measured by judging the quality of the produced geological map and cross-section. E.g. whether the location and shape of the exposures on the map are correct, the stratigraphic order of the rock formation is correct across the map, whether interpreted structural elements are correct and explain the observed distribution of rock formations. A high quality geological profile will go across a representative part of the produced map, include a scale bar, correctly reflect the surface geology (as observed in the field), has a consistent thickness for all rock layers (unless there is a geological reason (e.g. pinchout) for the layer to vary in thickness) and again, has realistic structural elements

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

By using a combination of in field and post field assessments the students will be learning essential field skills and link their field observations to interpret the observed geological formations and describe the geological history of the region.
The geological map is the synthesis of the data collection and will enable the students to demonstrate their recording and interpretation of the geology of the area. The cross section will demonstrate the student’s ability to interpret the data in 3 dimensions.
