Aims

•       A1_To make students aware of the organisational, operational and economic basis of the railway industry;
•       A2_To make students aware and familiar with planning and management techniques used in the rail operations (passenger and freight)

Outline Of Syllabus

•       Fundamental principles defining the railway as a system;
•       Railway management, safety, risks and operations (passenger and freight);
•       Railway economics and planning e.g. timetabling, decision-making processes related to node (e.g. stations) location

A combination of lectures, seminars and collaborative learning through practical exercises is an effective way to provide students with the acquisition of the necessary knowledge associated with the intended learning outcomes. The participation of external practitioners (visiting professional) from industry is an essential contribution to this.

The summative aspect of the assessment is done using written examination covering the syllabus with coursework being used to provide pass/fail formative guidance and assessment to students. . The exam paper employs a range of approaches in order to accurately assess student abilities. The coursework exercises reflect real-life examples of key areas covered within the course, enabling students to develop their understanding with practical problems.
